The place of birth is an important location and midpoint within the First 1000 Day Birth Plan.  Because creating a healthy baby is dependent on a thoughtful process that includes choice within these most important First 1000 Days, (conception to baby’s age 2), we have named the entire choice-process birthplaceAWE™.

The Birth Plan is a document that memorializes the birthplaceAWE™ process as crafted by the woman, her mate and her support group. 

Even as medical professionals such as a qualified Ob/Gyn, a midwife and doula, and pediatrician are all elements of a healthy birth process, the woman is her own expert.   She is captain of this most important birthplaceAWE™ process…..she is the ultimate choice-point……she is captain of the birthship.  The Birth Plan should also include a due diligence process to choose the best medical professionals and hospital for the ultimate place of birth.   Our suggestion is that the woman and her family carefully select a SafeSpot for that place of birth.  Finding a hospital SafeSpot that exhibits proven evidence-based practices with exceptional birth results that honors the woman’s choice for a natural full-term vaginal birth should be part of the selection process.

In an ideal world, under ideal circumstances, the Birth Plan should be followed by everyone as consented to in the plan.   As in life, it is important to note that there is always the possibility that intervening events occur that suggest plans be constructed with sufficient flexibility so change will occur according to the circumstance.   The pregnant woman and her family should always know that they are at choice and in-charge of the birthplaceAWE™ process.   All elements within the birth process must understand the woman’s Birth Plan and honor her right to choose. 

The place of birth chosen by the woman and her family must have excellent active non-judgmental listening qualities.  Along with medical competency, active non-judgmental listening is one of the most important attributes of a birthplace to be considered a birthplaceAWE™ location. The Birth Plan and the process of creating the Birth Plan is one of the most important elements of creating a healthy baby that goes full-term of 38 – 40 weeks and beyond as a well nourished offspring.  

A well orchestrated Birth Plan, crafted by choice and followed by all parties in the Plan, will result in the best result.  The result will be a happy, well nourished baby.
